Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said in an interview with Russian Izvestia that Russian citizens with Armenian surnames may visit Azerbaijan, but they should inform the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moscow in advance to avoid "emotional" moods over the Karabakh issue.

Earlier, a Russian citizen Christina Gevorgyan posted on her Facebook page that she spent 13 hours at an international airport in Baku in a state of information isolation. He wanted to celebrate New Year holidays in Azerbaijan, but he was stopped in the passport department. Gevorgyan also informed that besides himself, two more families could not enter Baku due to the Armenian surname of one of their relatives. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that Gevorgyan's case was "a private case" and that "there is no problem in Russian-Azerbaijani relations." The Russian Foreign Ministry, for its part, has stated that Azerbaijan's approach to Russians of Armenian origin is unacceptable.

“We say that if there are Russian citizens with Armenian surnames who want to visit Azerbaijan, please. But let them at least let us know about it at our embassy in Moscow, because we have visa-free travel with Russia, but the information we receive will help us not let any accident take place given the current conflict. We have always been very frank with Russia on this issue, "Mammadyarov said.
